September 2010: Round table on gold extraction in Southern Kivu / DRC
During her recent visits to DRC, Traudl Ott has facilitated the planning process of a local NGO (OGB -Observatoire Gouvernance et Paix) in order to help identify appropriate lobby activities for transparency in the gold sector. Mistrust is rising between mining companies, state authorities and communities. Employment modalities, compensations schemes and eviction of artisanal miners and population create conflicts. At the moment OGB is preparing a round table to improve communication between the different actors. An in-depth analysis of the situation and the conflicts has helped to elaborate an action plan with appropriate strategies.
